Christie’s Knows How to Celebrate Christmas

Gifting State of Mind

Christie’s may not the first venue considered when gifting is on your mind. From my walks around Manhattan, it looks like most of the world is doing their shopping on Amazon. In previous years I would see dozens of boxes from shops like Bloomingdale’s and Lord & Taylor, Gucci and Prada being delivered by FedEx to NY coops, now all I see are Amazon boxes.

I suspect there are still a few people who do not want to present a cliché to their significant other, and those are the people that crowded the aisles and corridors of Christie’s last night.

If you were not among the thousands of hoi polloi who wandered around Christie’s (near Rockefeller Plaza), you were not anywhere important.

Wine was sipped, hors d’oeuvres devoured, hand-painted pieces by Boticelli Ceramics were placed where they could be caressed, and holiday cards, full of Christmas cheer, were even affordable. Men and women were 3-deep at the jewelry counters with customers anxiously waiting their turn to grab a new necklace or pair of earrings.

Works of art from the famous (and not so famous) were hung on walls for fans to pick-up as last-minute gifts. Artists featured included Joris Laarman, Diane Arbus, Jasper Johns, and architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Christie’s Need Your Help

Christie’s International sold $4 billion of art in the first half of 2018, an increase of 35 percent from the previous year, representing a new 6-month high mark for the London – based auction company. With all the shoppers I saw last evening, it is likely that Christie’s will have the best year ever.
